Read all about it!
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be exploring many different newspaper articles and their features. We have compiled a report check list, and practised identifying who, what, where, when and why? Together we wrote an interesting 'Baby Steals Chocolate!' report today, and focused on using different sentence starters.
If you get the chance, it would be useful to let your child explore some newspapers...and maybe discuss some articles together...This is where 'First News' is particularly handy!

Today our news discussion turned towards the general election! It was clear some of the children already knew a bit about it, if not the names 'David' and 'Ed'! It is tricky to find age appropriate resources, but I used parts of this KS2 clip

which you may want to use to discuss further at home. There are a few other videos on the website.
There are also some 60 sec video clips about each party:

Continents Challenge!
As part of our topic work this week, the children have been set the challenge of learning the 7 continents, and locating them on a world map!
We will move onto the ocean challenge next week, so any practice you can get in would be great!!
NB: we have discussed the use of Australasia and Oceania, but have been using 'Australia'.

x
Our focus this week has been multiplication!!
We have been reading the 'x' sign, as 'lots/groups of.' So 3 x 2 = 3 lots/groups of 2
Initially, the children will draw groups and rows (arrays) to help them work out the answer. It is absolutely fine if they do this!
As they become more confident, they move on to use their fingers, as well as beginning to learn songs/rhymes to learn their tables by heart.
We are focusing on the 2s, 5s and 10s, so it is important that your child is secure in counting in these groups (up to 12 x ).
Activities...
* Set your child some times table sums. Begin with the 2s and extend to 5s and 10s.
* Online games - http://www.ictgames.com/spitfireufo.html
http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
*iPad - IXL (Yr 2 multiplication section - with your support)
Once your child is secure with these, then learning the 3s will be the next step.

Months of the year...
The children have been learning the months of the year by heart. Please can you continue to practise reciting these at home. You can extend your child by asking...'What month comes after..?' 'What month is 3 months before..?' 'What is the 6th month of the year?' etc.
